According to a DHS release, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem “determined that conditions in Haiti no longer meet the TPS statutory requirements,” after concluding that conditions in the country have improved sufficiently for Haitians in the U.S. to return. The DHS plans to terminate the designation effective on Sept. 2.

The DHS said Secretary Kristi Noem ended the temporary protected status designation for Haitians because letting them stay was against the “national interest.”

The Trump administration is putting an end to Haiti's Temporary Protected Status designation, dealing yet another devastating blow to roughly a half-million Haitian nationals, some of whom have lived in the United States for more than a decade.
