The vigil was held days after the victim, Michael Montoya II, was stabbed and killed at Maryvale High School. The suspect in the case is being charged as an adult.

Following a fatal classroom stabbing, parents at Maryvale High School are concerned about student safety and an apparent lack of communication from the school after the incident.

Maryvale High School was one of two Phoenix Union High School District schools to pilot an advanced weapons detection system.
