The streets of west London have been filled with colour and sound for the first day of the annual Notting Hill Carnival. Musicians and dancers in bright costumes took to the tarmac for the children's parade, as the largest street party in Europe got under way.

A total of 140 people have been arrested on the first day of a popular carnival. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that, of the dozens of arrests at the Notting Hill Carnival in London, 15 were for assaults on police.

The Met Police said there had been 140 arrests – 105 at the carnival and 35 on approaches to the carnival as a result of proactive policing interventions - as of 7.45pm on Sunday
