Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is sticking by his decision to break with NATO allies this week from spending more on defense.

THE HAGUE (Reuters) -President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States will make Spain pay twice as much for a trade deal after the country's refusal to meet a NATO defense spending target of 5% of gross domestic product.

Spain reached a deal with NATO ahead of the summit to be excluded from the new goal but would maintain its commitment to the alliance by spending 2.1% of GDP on defense, the Associated Press reported. What he's saying: Trump threatened to make Spain "pay twice as much" amid trade negotiations.
