In early December, Cameron County received an incorporation petition for the city of Starbase, Texas. Now, voters will decide on the matter during the general election on May 3 after Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño approved the petition.

South Texas residents living near billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX launch site will soon decide whether they'll be officially recognized as Starbase, Texas.

The Texas launch site of Elon Musk’s SpaceX could soon have its very own city. Officials on Wednesday approved an election sought by the aerospace firm that would allow residents who live near its Starbase site—almost all of them employees—to carve out a new municipality in an unincorporated area of Cameron County near the U.

Since breaking ground for Starbase in 2014, SpaceX has been developing, building and launching its Starship mega-rocket from the facility near Boca Chica Beach. And for years, CEO Elon Musk and other SpaceX officials have been pushing to rename the area.

Elon Musk is one step closer to creating his own city in the southern tip of Texas after a local vote was set for May 3 on his bid to incorporate Starbase, the remote property where SpaceX builds and launches the billionaire’s Starship rockets.

If a majority of the roughly 500 residents living around the South Texas site vote yes in May, Starbase will be the state’s newest city.
