For the first time since February 2019, water gushed into Lake Berryessa’s “Glory Hole” spillway late Tuesday after the area received about 2 inches of rain, said Chris Lee, general manager of Solano County Water Agency, which manages the lake.

The unique spillway at California's Lake Berryessa was activated this week for the first time in six years, according to Solano County Water Agency. Chris Lee, the general manager of the Solano County Water Agency, told sister station KCRA that water began flowing into the passive spillway Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

There’s really nothing like it. It’s a very odd-looking spillway that just disappears into the void. You almost have to see it.”

The Glory Hole acts as flood mitigation for the the manmade lake, serving as a massive funnel once water levels reach about 440 feet. Last year, water levels at the spillway edged on the brink of activation for weeks, but never managed to spill over.
