Maryland Gov. Wes Moore issued an executive order late Sunday declaring a state of emergency as a powerful winter storm approached with forecasts calling for heavy snow across much of the state.

Maryland weathered the state's first major snowstorm in years, leading Governor Wes Moore and Mayor Brandon Scott to declare states of emergency to give full access to resources to respond to the storm.

Snow started falling in Baltimore during the predawn hours of Monday morning, blanketing most of Maryland with several inches for the first time in nearly a year. More snow was expected to accumulate to up to 8 inches in Baltimore,
