Cameron County, Texas, is set to hold an election in May after SpaceX employees petitioned to make Starbase an official city.

Elon Musk is one step closer to creating his own city in the southern tip of Texas after a local vote was set for May 3 on his bid to incorporate Starbase, the remote property where SpaceX builds and launches the billionaire’s Starship rockets.

A Texas county on Wednesday approved holding an election sought by SpaceX that would let residents living around billionaire Elon Musk 's company decide whether to formally create a new city called Starbase.

Since breaking ground for Starbase in 2014, SpaceX has been developing, building and launching its Starship mega-rocket from the facility near Boca Chica Beach. And for years, CEO Elon Musk and other SpaceX officials have been pushing to rename the area.

If a majority of the roughly 500 residents living around the South Texas site vote yes in May, Starbase will be the state’s newest city.
