And now, after months of contentious negotiations, I’m happy to report that Tyson and Holyfield will be beating the shit out of each other for a third time on May 29, during Memorial Day weekend.
The last time Tyson and Holyfield fought was on June 28, 1997. Holyfield won via disqualification after Tyson bit part of his ear off in one of the most iconic moments of both men’s careers.
But now the boxers are much older and more susceptible to injury. Tyson, 53-years-old, has been away from the ring since 2005. And Holyfield, 57, has been out of action since 2011.
Holyfield-Tyson III has no shortage of selling points. The nostalgia, the name recognition and, yes, let’s be honest, the "this is bizarre" element to it. Boxing is in a weird place.
