The New England Patriots enjoyed decades of stability at the head coaching position, but for the third time in three seasons, they will have a new man lurking on the sidelines. That's because the team announced Sunday it has decided to part ways with Jerod Mayo after just one season on the job after succeeding Bill Belichick in Foxborough.

From a lack of talent on the roster to his inexperience and struggles with discipline, Mayo had little chance to succeed in New England.

After enjoying one of the lengthiest periods of coaching stability under Bill Belichick, the Patriots are going the one-and-done rout with Jerod Mayo.

“The harsh truth,” he wrote, “is this: Mayo’s decision to coach to win — the last and most damaging of his string of often contradictory if not outright inexplicable decisions — showed a complete lack of awareness regarding what is best for the Patriots’ present and future.”

Ben Johnson is expected to be one of the top candidates for a head coaching job in 2025. Multiple teams, including the Patriots, have requested to interview him, but for now, he is forced to put all of that on the backburner to focus on the Lions’ postseason run.
