Blinken, 62, had been subpoenaed by the House Foreign Affairs Committee Sept. 3 to appear for testimony Tuesday.

Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks, the committee’s ranking member, however, commended Blinken for being the first cabinet official to testify to the House immediately after the events of the withdrawal.

The committee, led by Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas), has given Blinken a Sept. 19 deadline to answer questions before the panel or face being held in contempt of Congress.
