An emperor penguin found earlier this month in Denmark, Australia — about 2,200 miles off the Antarctic coast — is reportedly being cared for by a wildlife expert.

For the first time, an emperor penguin was found in Australia, having made the 2,200 mile swim from its home in Antarctica. The lone penguin was spotted at a popular beach in the town of Denmark earlier this month.

Rescuers are trying to rehabilitate an emperor penguin that came ashore some 2,000 miles from its natural habitat, and what comes next is "still being worked through."

A malnourished emperor penguin has been found in Australia, marking the first recorded appearance of the species more than 2,200 miles from its Antarctic home. The adult male penguin was discovered on November 1 on a beach in Denmark, a popular tourist town in southwest Australia.

The state of Western Australia's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, said the penguin species has never been reported in Australia before.

Wildlife officials are looking at options for the malnourished penguin's future and returning him home has not been ruled out.
