OpenAI's new restructuring plan has implciations for its corporate future, especially if the organization hopes to one day IPO.

OpenAI will remain under the control of a non-profit, the startup at the heart of the generative artificial intelligence boom said on Monday, months after it outlined plans to revamp its structure to create a public benefit corporation that would make it easier to raise capital.

OpenAI launched in 2015 as a nonprofit artificial intelligence research lab. Four years later, it created a for-profit arm to lead its AI development and commercialization efforts. The investors who have backed OpenAI’s multibillion-dollar funding rounds received stakes in the for-profit arm.
