It seems like they found an answer, as the Sox have signed Nathaniel Lowe per Jeff Passan, a first baseman who was recently designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals. Lowe, a former Silver Slugger and Gold Glove, is the man the Sox hope can provide a defensive upgrade as first, as well as some more power.
The Washington Nationals requested unconditional release waivers on first baseman Nathaniel Lowe on Saturday after he was designated for assignment Thursday. Lowe was batting just .216 but was second on the Nationals with 68 RBIs and tied for second with 16 homers.
In an announcement made by the team, they revealed they claimed right-handed pitcher Julian Fernandez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester. Since there was a spot on the 40-man roster open, they didn't have to make a corresponding move.
