Old VW's and old Porsche's due have a similar smell, having owned both. It's that air cooled thing and both tend to leak oil. Also, the gas tank inlet/filler is in the front right next to the driver's window, so both tend to get that gas/oil smell, especially with a filled tank and on start up.

My comparison was between an old 912 that recently went on here for the low $30s, which is about the same range as a 996T - and was alluding to the fact that 1) The 912 is a shorthood, 2) It's an old Porsche, 3) It's somewhat like a 911, and 4) It drives like an old 911 (at least the '67 that I drove).

Jun 12, 2008 · I don't believe an old 911 is a target for theives. They are too rare and distinct. The owners often know the serial number of the engine and transmission. The professionals go after common cars with a large market for parts: Civics, Camreys, etc. _____
